My snail concentration camp. At the bottom of the bin is the glass from the mysteriously smashed patio table. I think a racoon did it.

Baby Romas

Tomatoes, for most people, the main reason for having a home vegetable garden!

So far, we've eaten, lettuce, spinach, swiss chard, strawberries and peas from the garden. Also made pesto from basil, used a lot of dill, coriander, green garlic and garlic scapes in salsas and marinades.

The vegetable garden.

My goal was to grow vegetables for the family without spending a lot of money, and that meant starting everything from seed, something I hadn't done before. It's a lot simpler than I thought it would be, I didn't even buy grow lamps, just moved my seed trays around the house, following the sun.

So $87 worth of seeds (too many!) and bags and bags of potting soil and compost later...

Alex from Willowtree Farm generously supplied me with the best spinach seeds ever.

The spinach was started from seed in April, planted in May and eaten in June. The second crop is getting too leggy and bolting, because it's too warm.
